DANIEL KOBIALKA - violinist, composer
Brilliant, thoughtful, filled with joy and enthusiasm for his music and his instrument, world-renowned violinist Daniel Kobialka embraces the Classic, Classical New Age, and into the Avant Garde.

Daniel Kobialka has been the Principal 2nd Violinist with the San Francisco Symphony for over two decades, occupying the Dinner and Swig Families Chair. In addition to his many performances worldwide, he is the founding concertmaster and annual soloist with the Midsummer Mozart Festival under George Cleave, with whom he has recorded the Mozart’s Violin Concerto No, 1. He has commissioned over 30 works from such composers as Pulitzer Prize winners Charles Wuorinen, William Bolcom, Henry Brant, and Wayne Peterson.

He has premiered both solo works and concertos for violin, including Ben Weber’s Violin Concerto, dedicated to him, with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra under the late Robert Shaw. With the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, he gave both the American premiere of Toru Takemitsu’s "Far Calls, Coming Far," and the world premiere of Charles Wuorinen’s "Rhapsody", a work written especially for Mr. Kobialka. He also premiered Henry Brant’s "Litany of Tides" with the San Jose Symphony and George Barati’s Violin Concerto with the Santa Cruz Symphony. Some of the other composers who have written and dedicated works for Mr. Kobialka include George Rochberg, Meyer Kupferman, Lou Harrison, Vivian Fine, Henry Brant, Fred Fox, Arthur Custer, Theodore Antoniou, Marta Ptaszynska, and Benjamin Lees.

He served as concertmaster for the premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s "Mass" which opened the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Most recently, Mr. Kobialka composed and performed the musical score for the highly acclaimed documentary film, Split Horn, which premiered at the San Francisco Asian Film Festival in the spring of 2001. He was also recently invited to perform at the International Holistic Health Association’s second "Global Holistic Health Summit” in Bangalore, India, in November 2002. The theme of the conference is Holistic & Integrated Medicine for the 21st Century.
