Artist's Bio
One Way Productions began in the barren dorm rooms of Millikin University. It was during the early 90's in the central Illinois town of Decatur that Skee Skinner & Paul Branton began to conceptualize films they planned to make. The two developed a bond that is founded in a love for cinema, storytelling, & "conscious awareness."
The pair achieved moderate success with their first offering Vacant Lot; a feature film shot over 12 days in two cities during the fall of '98. Vacant Lot enjoyed a successful cable TV run on the STARZ network. Over the years the two have shot music videos, written books and worked on smaller film projects both apart and as a team, but never lost sight of their big film dreams. In a constant search for investors and the right team to put behind their ideas, financial help came during the summer of 2004. Not wanting to be disappointed with yet another empty promise, the pair quickly worked to get all the pieces in place. The only problem was their script they had planned to shoot, was tied up in a legal battle. Not wanting to let opportunity pass them by, Skinner & Branton wove together three existing stories, while creating a fourth. In the end, the development of the screenplay Pieces of a Dream almost wrote itself.
The four individual stories that make up the entire pieces were derived from various times of their lives and are extremely personal. One of the things that makes Pieces of a Dream so unique, is that each story has its own texture, yet seem to fit together seamlessly. Placing the four main characters within the same neighborhood gave the storytellers a chance to overlap and play with perspective and time. What unfolded in the creative process was almost magical.
Gathering the best talent from across the country, the "wonder pair" took the team to Alton, IL, Skee's hometown. It was in this small city by the Mississippi River that the pair, in conjunction with co-producer Luther Simmons, were able to have total control of the shooting environment without worrying about big city “red tape”. Whatever the city had to offer was at the filmmakers' disposal, including the police department, courthouse and mansions. The different looks of the city offered a great texture for a film that has four different feelings to it.
In the end, the cast and crew realized the mission that One Way Productions set out on was not to just create a film, but to start a movement; gathering a team that would "change the game" of filmmaking. One Way Productions is clearly set on raising the consciousness of filmmaking and becoming a major force in the filmmaking industry. The importance of every aspect of film that makes them great, yet still remain entertaining, got lost somewhere along the way in Hollywood. So in creating films outside that system, but still successfully navigating & negotiating within that system, One Way Productions is able to creatively explore topics and bring images to the forefront not often or seldom seen.
The entire Pieces Of A Dream project truly carries the hearts of young artists that believe wholeheartedly in revolution. The spirit of the Harlem Renaissance, that ushered in so many incredible talents, both male and female, has returned at the turn of the century in the Midwest. It's not just a movie, it's a movement and a new era of art on film!
"I truly believe I was put here to make films, it's as simple as that. It is what it is. I'm merely doing what I'm supposed to be doing. It's not for me to say whether Pieces of a Dream is a landmark film, ultimately that's up to 'the people,' but I do want people to be inspired by my work. At the end of the day, here's an example of a filmmaker and the 'conscious film' movement, and how we can produce entertaining, marketable, thought-provoking, & profitable feature films."
